Preserving Chrome

Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:30 pm

My question: How do I preserve fine chrome plated brass diving goods for 30 or 40 years? Do I just drop'em in a jug of 10w-40 Quakerstate oil or what? Dave....?

Just asking.....personal preservation..thats all :D

I"ll hang up and listen...thank you :|

I just wash it in fresh water, let it dry in the shade and dive it the next time. Some spray silicone goes on it, if it is to be stored. I'll be dead in 30 or 40 years and my kid will sell it all on ebay, so it isn't much of an issue. Steve

What Yank said

What are you preserving for what purpose. Thirty or forty years from now, the world is ending in 2012  .

Cosmoline.

Anything that will hold moisture against a surface can cause pitting of chrome.

Nothing is forever.

Just clean your regs good after diving, and once dry, use some Meguiar's cleaning wax on the chrome areas. You can get it at any automotive store..

Hey guys, I'm late to this party but thought I would put my .02 euros in..

DO NOT use any sort of silicon on your chrome...EVER! When I get regs come in for chroming or repair that have had the label RTV'd on, there is always a silicon spot on the brass underneath. I usually electro-clean before going to the tanks. Normally I only need to do this for 30 seconds. When ever there's a silicon spot...I have to mask the reg and electro-clean for 30 minutes!!!

Cosmoline? NO!!! Cosmoline is great for preserving steels. Crap for chrome. You guys have to remember that chrome is porous and cosmoline, oils, silicons, etc can all stain the nickel underneath. And in some cases the brass too.

All you need to do is rinse thoroughly and put a nice carnuba wax on it. That's it. Do that and your chrome will last a lifetime. And stay away from anything that polishes.

Every piece I chrome gets a coat of wax before it's wrapped up and shipped.

I second you Nem.
I bought cosmoline from the airport by the jug and have close to 5 Nortons bathing in it, mind you, they are mostly steel, not chrome.
