Wazee Vintage Dive May 25-26
- We have at least four divers (so far) committed to diving Wazee in Black River Falls, WI this weekend. Weather is looking to be fabulous. Visibility WAS around 25 feet a couple of weeks ago shortly after the ice melted according to Sea Hunt Jerry. I'm hoping it cleared up even more since then... Lake turn over, etc.
- For those unfamiliar with Wazee, its a former mining pit that's been converted to a park and diving destination. There are several diving access points around the lake and several underwater attractions. Sherwood Forest has a sunken Chris Craft cruiser. Bluegill has and underwater compass course, wishing well, and others. Water clarity has been 50+ feet in past years.
- Wazee lake is near Black River Falls, WI. There are two dive shops on the road to Wazee so air fills are no problem. There's a casino near town with buffet dining room. We stay at the Comfort Inn and get a free hot breakfast. There's also an Americinn, other motels, and trailer camping. Restaurants... 1-2 downtown and a Pizza Hut, McDonalds, and Culvers out by the Freeway.
- There's a fee for parking and diving... It amounts to about $13 per day. Camping is available at extra charge.
- We usually meeting up at the Sherwood access on Friday around noon and make diving and dinner plans from there.

Wazee is BACK!
- We had a wonderful dive trip to Wazee last Friday and Saturday. Visibility was 20-30 feet, the sun was shining brightly, and our dives were great. Rich and I, then Ron, arrived first on Friday. Saturday Jay and Drew joined us and we enjoyed Ron's "Turkey Royale" for lunch. Ooh Baby that was good!
- Friday's first dive was pretty neat. We dove Sherwood forest and cruised down through the trees to the 60 ft deep training platform. From there we followed the rope down over ledge after ledge until we got to 120 feet. This is where the rope goes over the edge into oblivion... Our NO DECO time was down to 4 minutes so we started back up, cruised over to the ridge at 50 feet, then crossed the ridge and found the new Pirate Skeleton standing there with his parrot skeleton. Pretty neat. From there we continued to another platform, then to the big sunken Chris Craft boat, and finally back through the field of culverts to the beach. About 30 minutes. We did a 2nd dive using the same double tanks and my Scooter... About 20 minutes as I breathed my 38s right down to zero psi! We made one more dive with fresh tanks on Friday. Then, we checked into the Comfort Inn and went out to Pizza Hut for some delicious pizza.
- Saturday we enjoyed a complimentary He-Man hot breakfast at Comfort Inn and got out to Wazee early. Diving the WALL and Bluegill Alley. Ron went with Drew and Rich and I headed down the Wall. Again we swam through trees and brush over ledge after ledge. Finally reaching an outcropping at 110 feet. Over the edge was nothingness... Pretty neat though. We came back up through the woods and finished the dive in 50 then 30 feet depths. For our second dive, we took the scooter into Blue Gill Alley and saw a couple of new sites. One was a park bench overlooking a slope and a full sized shark statue. The other was a topless mermaid sitting on a dive platform. The second dive encountered a lot of stirred up silt already, due to the large number of divers there on a Saturday... (We had the whole park to ourselves on Friday)
- STATS: Visibility was better than most lakes at 20-30 feet. Temps were as cold as 37 degrees down deep and of course much warmer as you neared the surface. When the sun comes out like this at Wazee, it feels like you are at a tropic beach... Sandy beaches and aqua blue water... And you warm up fast between dives. I really enjoyed this trip a lot. :)

Friday I made 2 dives with my UDS-1 triples. 1st dive I went to 91 feet. That is the deepest I've dove the unit so far. 2nd dive on the unit I got towed around by Eben with his scooter and filmed around the boat. 3rd dive I dove a 80 cu ft aluminum tank with the US Divers Phoenix Bryan did for me. Worked great.

Saturday Drew dove with me and the first dive was cut short. 2nd dive I dove my Voit Navy with Twin 72's and Drew dove my vintage US Divers Triples with my US Divers Heavy Yoke RAM. We stayed somewhat shallow but had fun. 3rd dive we just re-filled the tanks and I dove my Navy again and Drew switched to my US Divers Phoenix. We found 3 dive platforms and the outboard, the shark, the mermaid, the wishing well, the outhouse with the skull and a couple of dive compass heading stations where people train to use their compass headings.

I made more than enough Turkey Supreme for lunch so I gave the leftovers to the dive group across from us and they really appreciated the hot lunch. For once the bugs didn't get me too bad although I did come back with a few welts on my neck.
