VDH Universal Backplate _ double duty?

Sun Nov 24, 2019 3:11 pm

Hi,
Has anyone used VDH's double hose backplate with a standard single hose setup? I am planning a month long trip next year and hope to bring both my Phoenix-Aquamaster and a single hose setup. Has anyone comfortably used VDH's plate with a single hose regulator? I would really prefer not to have to pack two backplates. Re-configuring the harness wouldn't be a problem. Even using a single tank adapter if required.
Thanks.

I do it all the time. No single tank adapter is needed.

(Caveat: apparently I am the only one that uses an OMS single plate adapter on steel 72s with my AM and Voit Phoenix(s) only just because of their depth and my weird back. Travelling usually means an aluminum 80 and even my Phoenix(s) fit great on those without an adapter. For me, all SH and DH regs can be used with the VDH plate.)

Single hose reg's don't have a positioning issue like the double hosers and they work just fine with the VDH backplate. I routinely use my Scubapro Mk 7 and occasionally my Aquamatic with mine.

So, do people find it necessary to modify the crossed webbing at the back of the neck, or just pull things a little tighter to raise the tank, or just leave the tank hung low as normal with the double hose?

as an AL80 is tall, I just run the tank higher in the bands...

Just leave it low. It won't bother a single hose

Well, since things are slow, I'll give an update. Since posting this I have spent some time with Bryan's double hose backplate. I have found no disadvantage using it with single hose regs. In fact it is very light and very small and packs flat. As people suggested, I just raise the tank foe single hose use. I haven't used my standard aluminum backplate since last November.

Has anyone used the VDH backplate with double tanks? Any issues?

No issues at all. With the VDH backplate double tanks ride well. To get optimum DH can placement I have drilled additional mounting holes in the plate but that is pretty easy to.

I have an AL63 twinset on a military solid bar manifold I dive with my DH. I just use a sex bolt to attach at the plate so it is flush.
