During my first ice dives I did not use the rubber plug back then. I just kept the mouthpiece low in the water. The DH just doesn’t have a tendency to freeze even if you accidentally induce a free-flow on the surface.

If you decide to use the curve mouthpiece, remember to detune the venturi flow by uncovering one of the side air bleed ports.

Curious about the DSV and ice diving. I'm wondering about the valve freezing in either the open or closed position if wet and exposed to the air...... this likely to happen or be something to look out for?
I'll have the DSV under the ice in late March. I'm sure it will perform just fine. I'll be posting photo's when that happens. Video too if possible.

Well, my class got cancelled..... But there is good news - I found a class about 6 hours north of here where the ice will be better. Interestingly, the instructor is also a DH diver/collector, and has no issue with me diving it. Also, his requirement is no octo (back-up must be on a pony), so my thoughts are validated! Now, just have to shake the plague I came down with on Thursday before class in 2-1/2 weeks...

Minus 13? That's cold even for me! Ha. Looks like a good time. Did you get decent viz under the ice? Were there a lot of single hosers free flowing?

Yeah, -13F, that is cold...
We have not seen it that cold over here this years, and I am OK with that.
That is big smile. You must have been having a good time.
