Lambertsen and O2: beginnings of operational physiology.

Sat Sep 24, 2016 12:38 pm

I missed bidding on a book this morning on ebay that made me quite unhappy but led me to a source worth taking a look at. I include the Ebay link to the completed sale in case you want to capture the cover photo.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Swim-Sc ... 7675.l2557

Note the title, publisher and date of 1952. It is the original publication of the work by Dr. Christian J. Lambertsen. I have never seen this book or any record of it before and am very surprised the final price was so low. I have a feeling I know the winner. If so, it went to someone who will take good care of it. Looking forward to seeing a write up of the book in HDS.

The loss of the purchase led me to the following source that some might enjoy that was new to me. The family of the late Dr. Christian J. Lambertsen generously donated his works to the Rubicon Research Repository. All items in this collection are released through Creative Commons Attribution + Noncommercial + ShareAlike (BY-NC-SA) licenses in an attempt to encourage the use of these works to further scientific understanding of physiology. So, these folks offer a legal download of a scan of th " Report of the Cooperative Underwater Swimmer Project"

While the text is quite readable it is unfortunate that the scan of photos is quite poor. The book was scanned years ago at low resolution. It would be a wonderful thing if the ebay buyer of this book offered to supply the web site and the Lambertsen family a better scan of the book that would show the photos as they should be seen.

The organization offers many downloads including this legal re-print of the history of the Lambertsen Lung. Its a very nice write up with very clear photos and details of the device as well as some details of other underwater demo equipment. Highly recommend taking a look at this link if just for the photos.

Site also has photo collections so you can download many of the photos in large format. Heck of a source for an HDS article.
