Need help with Dive Light

Fri Mar 13, 2020 2:53 pm

I was at an LDS a few days ago and the owner gave me an old dive light that someone had brought in to her.
Its not complete but the lamp housing is a beauty.
It doesn't have the battery case.
I have no idea of what it might have looked like.
Here is what I got.
Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like an early canister light light head for cave divers. The other end would have attached to a lexan battery canister. If it is, those batter canisters were huge.

I would concur JAdair,
I just wish I could find a picture reference.
Just so I could fabricate a reasonable copy.

Looking closer at it, the cord is what is not right for a vintage cave light, and that was bugging me. Even way back they did not use that type of cord. I will change my "guess", it is a vintage video light. Plus I think Sea Development may have become Sea & Sea. By tomorrow I may have a different answer...... :D

I knew I had seen a similar light and by chance found the picture. It is from the book, "The Darkness Beckons" 1991. Picture is of Sheck Exley from the 70's. Main difference seems to be the light cord coming from the handle, but other than that its pretty close. You can also see the canister for it. You can also see the Ikelight C Light hanging as a back up light.

Surprisingly the canister is also of Plexiglas.
Its a good thing because it shows the batteries used.
Many Thanks JAdair!

seakrakken,

Cave light canisters were normally Plexiglas (except for the Dive Rite square canisters) up until about the late 90's when pretty much everyone switch to Delrin.

We used to make similar lights. The bulb was an aircraft 50W landing light. Since they were used in freshwater only the connections were often wet and the bulb was exposed. Sometimes they worked. The batteries were taken from NiCad aircraft starting batteries, 1.2 volts per cell.
