St. James Quarry Aug 23rd

Tue Aug 21, 2012 12:54 pm

- Tom McClusky brought back some great video of St. James Quarry, way up near Biwabik MN. Visibility 70+ feet and kind of like Fortune Pond. A few of us are heading up there (Sea Hunt Jerry and others) this Thursday. I'll be diving my Double Hose regs... Others may go modern. Everyone is welcome.
- Send a PM or email for directions... Getting there sounds like an adventure!

- Sea Hunt Jerry and I, plus a couple of young guys Jerry trained and certified... Four of us tried out St. James quarry. Very clear water and plenty of depth to explore... The sides were still going down when I reached a ledge at 127'.
- The water wasn't quite as exceptionally clear as we hoped. I could see the surface rippling at the sun from 80 ft down but lateral visibility was probably more like 25-40 feet. There wasn't much to look at that we could find.
- We decided to go back up the road about a half hour to Gilbert, MN to Lake Ore-Be-Gone. Visibility was similar but Ore-Be-Gone has several sights to see: a helicopter, airplance, boat, trolley car, and even a school bus. FUN!
- Topped the trip off with custom burgers and malts from Gordy's in Cloquet!
