I took part in an ice dive up at Fortune Pond, Crystal Falls upper Michigan yesterday. Great conditions topside and underwater. Super clear water, 37 degree water temp, 20 topside. I think it will be a little warmer at Sea Hunt Forever in a couple weeks. :D

Thanks for posting Jim. I think you caught things "just right" to get a topside temp as warm as 20 degrees! Wow its been a cold winter. Sounds like the water clarity was great as usual. !

We even had bright sun shine! The hot chili and cold beer really topped things off nicely. After three bowls though I was wishing I was staying in Iron River that night so I could go take a nap instead of driving home!

I agree. As someone who has never done an ice dive or even been on a frozen lake/pond, I have to ask. What is the minimum thickness of ice that can support guys and gear as you have there? It looks thin to me.

Cheers,

Couv

Well, there was 20 inches of snow, six inches of water on top of the ice and eighteen inches of ice. Personally I will not take a vehicle on ice. Not one I'm not willing to lose anyway. It has been done with less, but I won't ice dive with anything less then about ten inches. In Upper Michigan and Wisconsin for that matter, it's not an issue this time of year.
