Do J-Valves Increase Breathing Effort?
- There was a discussion on another forum about how SPG needles will move when you breath using a J-Valve in the up position. I checked out my own J-Valves and they all did it just as Herman said they would. But in the process of breathing with the J-Valve up and with it down, I think I detected the breathing effort to be a little harder when the J-Valve was up (reserve "ON").
- Am I just imagining that?

A way to check is to attach an IP gauge to the hookah port and check the pressure drop with the J on and off. If there is no difference than breathing effort should be the same.

Thanks Tom. I tried that this weekend. Hooked the IP gauge to the hookah port. The needle goes from 110 down to 90 when I inhale. And it does the same thing whether the reserve lever is up or down.

So the answer to the question is: No, J-valves Do NOT increase breathing effort.
