Does any one know what year they, USDivers quit putting in the tank linings. Were they the only ones to do it? I don't think I have ever seen a lining in a PST cylinder or scubapro steel cylinders. Also what year did they start? :?

I have 2 VOIT Steel 72's and they have the vinyl coating. I've peeled a lot of it off, but ended up spraying over some of it, so the tanks wouldn't corrode underneath the vinyl.

Is that what you did? I know painting over classic tanks is kinda frowned upon by some folks, but I use this gear for diving more than displaying.

Roger is talking about the vinyl lining inside the cylinder.

I can't remember any other cylinder besides USD with a liner. I remember a USD catalog page advertising the new lining to prevent corrosion. I think it was late 50's. May find some info here but I didn't look myself.

I always thought it was 1969-1972 or so. If you need to remove it, tumbling with standard medias will not work, or only works after a very long time. We have had good results with steel deck screws as the sharp threads will cut into the lining instead of trying to wear it off. I have only used stainless screws but standard steel ones should work as well.
Getting the lining off of the very center of the bottom and up by the neck may take some work with a brush/whip unless you can tilt the tank as it is tumbled.

I had 2 1969 U.S.Divers 53's tumbled to remove the lining.
The shop suggested tempered glass.
They came out nice.

Hi,
Started tumbling tanks in the Mpls Stpaul area in the very early 70's.
I was the only game in town and used aquarium rocks and even those would remove white
or Brown(red) linings.Global sells aluminum oxide which works very well and yeah it takes a while.Karl's tripples around vin 57 had white and I tumbled them out.

The Blue Vetronized coating that Usdivers put in for about two years is the worst crap ever made it would start peeling off like wallpaper. You can tumble it off its rubbery and the only way to remove is use chemicals(NOT safe cannot get out the fumes from the pores)
