I have someone near me who is selling a pair of PST steel 45s. I am interested in doubling these. Does anyone have experience with these doubled? What is your opinion of 45s as doubles?

Thanks,

Scott

They should be similar to twin steel 50s, only better due to 3/4" necks. And IMO better than aluminum 50s due to being less buoyant. You'll only have 90 cu. ft instead of 100 but that isn't much difference. If it were me I'd jump on them; I wanted to get a pair of 45s but the LDS only had one tank and no hope of getting any more..

This is a chart showing the specifics of the the PST LP 45. Are you sure they are the same as the 50?

If these are the ones you are interested in, it appears they are only 5.5" in diameter as compared to the 6.9" of tanks that use the easier to get manifolds and bands.

I have not seen them. All I know is they are PST 45s and they were hydroed a year ago. He said they are doubled when he got them but he is keeping the manifold. The price is $65 for the pair. If getting a manifold and bands is going to be an issue. I may pass on them.

65 bucks is a steal. Even if u cant manifold and band them you could get Allan to make some badass basket harnesses for them.

For that price I would make them work into some kind of doubles. Specially if they have a standard 3/4in neck.

If they are narrow and you are not interested, I would surely like to make them into a set even if it is an odd set with a larger space than normal between the tanks.

It sounds as if I should buy them as long as they look good. I will be seeing them sometime this week. If I don't do anything with them I will bring them to Portage.

I have a set of tanks that are Faber LP 45's, they are almost the same as the PST 45's and are 5.5" in diameter. The tank bands and manifold I have for the tanks where sold by OMS. It is a dual outlet manifold with a tank C/L spacing of 7.31". (or 185mm) It's a nice set-up. As far as I know OMS didn't sell a single outlet manifold with this spacing and I don't think they have the manifold and bands I have in there catalog anymore.

With a tank diameter of 5.5" and a manifold with a 8.25" spacing you will have a 2.75" gap between the tanks. You will need to have tanks bands made up for this arrangment. If you go ahead with this I can give you a name of someone that will make custom tank bands for you. He charges $125.00 - $150.00 for custom bands, but they are very well made.

If the tanks are in good nick the price is more than fair.

Ken.

You can always fabricate some custom bands out of stainless steel strap.

I picked up the tanks this weekend. I have a Selpac manifold with the center outlet and an outlet on one of the posts I plan on using on them. There is currently a set of bands on the auction site (Item 230458175719) which I may pick up if they go for a reasonable price.

Now the question is how should I rig these? I have never dove a set of doubles. My preference is to not use a backplate and I want the option to add a wing. I will be diving these with a variety of double hoses and with a modern single hose. Any suggestions?

Take a look at this thread:

I always use a plain harness with doubles. I would never use a back plate; doubles are just very comfortable with just a harness.

For a wing I just added a Zeagle horse-shoe looking wing that I strap directly to the tanks. It works great!

Thank you, that is what I am looking to do. Do you know the model of the Zeagle?

Thanks,

Scott
