Would someone please tell me where in the USD manual it says to grease up your Mistral like a late night date you picked up at the Dragon Lady in Subic Bay? I must have missed that chapter…..

I'm not sure it says that in as many words... but on a similar note, I just performed my first Mistral rebuild! And no... the insides didn't look like that!

Actually I believe petroleum jelly, not grease, is the lube de jour in Olongapo City.

Maybe it is a cold water kit! I guess I should have a look in them before just diving them. I am still in my rookie year. :D

I must be doing something wrong. I just rebuilt one of my Mistrals (with a kit I got from Brian) and I did not fill mine up with grease, silicon or any other such nonsense. A little silicon on the threads and that was about it.

This regulator also had the original body gasket, HP spring, O-ring and snap ring circlip in it….And it was sold to Karl as “rebuilt”
Reproduction parts are available for all USD double hosers. Common sense should tell you that after 40 or 50 years some if not all parts should be replaced. When someone DOES NOT do this and then tells the buyer that it’s “rebuilt” they are lying through their teeth! And they basically care more about making a buck than the safety of the diver they are selling the regulator to….. It is frauds and charlatans like this that will get someone hurt or even worse heaven forbid…..And that my friends will put a SERIOUS hurt on the Vintage Equipment Diving Community and its future….

BTW, After sand attaches itself to all that silicone grease it will act just like sandpaper on both those levers and the underside of the diaphragm…..Hey but who cares, I got my money back on it…..

So that reg was sold to Karl as REBUILT? That is not good. If that is rebuilt then I have a bunch that are rebuilt for sale. Well, it is good that we have a forum to share this info and protect each other as well as educate. Perhaps the seller thought the reg was rebuilt and was as in the dark as we were about it.

Another alternative (one that is at least as scary or maybe more) is that a very ignorant individual truly believes that opening a regulator, checking that it is somewhat clean (or cleaning it) and adding grease could be consider an overhaul. Even if it wasn’t malicious, ignorance can be just as dangerous.

Ebay is a strange place! It did breathe extremely well and I then knew that it was not quite right. I decided that if I was going to continue to dive it, I wanted to have it serviced fully. Thanks Bryan!!!

It was probably that "old Navy" fellow that rebuilt my DA with the wrong parts.

This is the equivilent of saw dust in the automatic transmission, just put some grease in her and that will do it :D
