new hose cleaning after use

For those new stretch hoses that are maiing the rounds, I have done the following and it seems to do the trick.

I procured a 18 inch long cylinder from Kmart, it has a nice firm nylon sealed lid.

I bought 5 bottles of 99% alcohol (isopropyl), I put 4 bottle in to fill three quarters. full.

Now when I am done diving, i take off hoses, drop them both into this cylinder full of alcohol. Alcohol mixes with water, and after soaking for a minute with some agitation to remove air bubbles, they are removed and allowed to drip dry. The alcohol evaporates nicely , no worries about bacteria. No need for hose dryers, whirlygigs, thingamagigs, just a small clothespin to hang em to dry. I also use to do the mouthpiece and cages with mushroom valves.

Did you find that the hoses have a better taste after this procedure? My first diving experience with the hoses was less than satisfactory. The hoses are nice, stretchy and all, but the "minty" taste was almost too much for me. I wonder if a good mouthwash might make them taste better or maybe just a spin through the washing machine might help. Anybody else had this experience?

I had the minty taste, but i poured Listerine down the hoses first. Listerine is a grwt anti bacterial and when mixed 50/50 with water can be sprayed on areas where cats have marked their territory, and it takes the smell away (let it sit for ten minutes though). But i digree, after the listering there was no taste. After the alcohol, the smell evaporates as does the alcohol.

The Minty taste you noted I think may have been mould release?

I had it to, but used Listerine

I have to watch the way I write with all the quick wits here ion the forum.

If the cats had marked my hoses, they would have become lake kitens real quick. Acxtually the place we moved into had a cat in it before, and none to clean at that judging by the mess i had to celan out of the place. phew!

I am sure that method works well, but to take the hoses off after every day of diving could become really irriating. I run listerene through mine after a day of diving from one end all the way past the mouthpiece and out of the flapper. I only then have to remove one clamp on the supply side horn. Of course the hoses probably never get dry but I hope that the listerene keeps all the bad stuff from growing.

If I told you I would have to send the NAVED death squad after you. For your own safety it must remain a secret until it is presented on the one and only VDH site. I will give you a hint however....It has to do with SCUBA stuff, Now I must go as the walls have ears and I have said too much already.

Pink YES! But I was planning on paying a homage to PADI for all they have done for us. Perhaps a shirt with a rare NAMBOO vintage reg?
