Vintage Double Hose

IMO Basic Scuba by Fred Roberts should be the 1st book read by anyone interested in diving with Vintage Scuba Equipment. Both editions!

What other books would you consider as "Required Reading" for Vintage Diving 101 and why ?

I know more than a few of you have some very strong opinions abou this subject !!

The sections on Basic Skin and Scuba equipment and Skills of Skin and Scuba Diving in The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving by the conference for National Co-operation in Aquatics. I would recommend the earlier editions, none later than 1968. The first section on equipment describes the various masks, fins, etc, but also the use of the D-ring quick release and the basic principles of single and double stage regulators. The Skills portion of this book has the famous diagrams of hose clearing, buddy breathing (a skill no longer taught in open water classes) and doffing and donning double hose regulators. This book was the classic used in most dive classes prior to NAUI and PADI. I used one in my YMCA class in 1962.

I second the New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving, they just don't write book like that or the Basic Scuba anymore. I was thinking on writing a book called the "Lost Science of Skin and Scuba Diving"

We have our work cut out for us to reverse 30 years of plastisocis within the dive community, the books these fellows read have small words and big letters. Science, all they know about that is they flunked it in High School.

THis could be a collaborative effort, with various members of the forum writting on very specific areas.. Some of us are prolific writers, we know the DHG regs, can diesct them part by part, write a descrip[tion of the part and its use and functioning within the double hose.

The nerve of those scuba board thingies talking such trash about us ...lol

Of course we squeeze every ounce of performance out of our regs, much like a race car driver squeezes every ounce oif perfomance out of his engines.

We are every bit consumayte professionals.

Our gear may be old, but it is still serviceable , and unlike the plactic wonders of today, wont crack or break if a little abuse is heaped on it.


We could title the book.

The modern science of double hose scuba diving.

These are all EXCELLENT sources of Double Hose Diving information. Lots of photos and tons of information. All these books are very easy to find on Albris or Amazon or Yahoo. I dont think I paid more than $20.00 for any of them...

I just picked up the second edition of Basic Scuba by Fred Roberts. It was delievered to my work and I only got a chance to skim through it.

There is allot of great information on the vintage regulators.

Basic Scuba is loaded with exploded diagrams of numerous regs along with troubleshooting charts. It is clearly written and quite informative. I wish I had had this info a long time ago. Get this book!

Best of all, both books cost me $15.
