DON'T DO THIS.......

Sat Oct 15, 2016 12:42 pm

This is about Phoenix installs but applies to ALL regulator service.

I realize folks like to be frugal......Saving money is not a bad thing but being penny wise and pound foolish is another and could be potentially dangerous!!!

Photos below are from two different regulators that had Phoenix first stage put on them......Neither regulator had any of the other original parts changed on them by the person who did the work and the owner was wondering why neither of the breathed very good and why one freeflowed out of control after using it a couple of times.

Do not re-use 50 yr old perishable parts.....Do Not use silicone gasket adhesive to seal between the body and can.....Bigger the glob better the job does not apply when installing DBE's.....

Bottom line........SERVICE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.....IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR OLD PARTS BACK AFTER YOUR REGULATOR WAS SERVICED YOU GO RIPPED OFF AND YOU ARE DIVING WITH A REGULATOR THAT HAS A HIGH PROBABILITY OF FAILURE.....

 looks like water got into the Phoenix as well, considering all the verdigris on the springs, seat, orifice, and filter as well! Hope they caught those tell-tale signs before they even dove it. Am I correct in assuming the owner had a 3rd party install it?

It's like crying over spilled milk.....Won't really do any good......I have them both cleaned up and they are headed back to the left coast tomorrow. One of them was still working although it breathed like a Mistral on a 3500psi cylinder....On the other the 50 yr old HP diaphragm had perforated and was not functional. I have no doubt the person who did the install "thought" they were doing the right thing but in reality should leave regulator service alone and take up golf before they hurt someone.

Is it just me or more idiots attempting to pass themselves off as REAL regulator repair specialists? This is why I service my own regulators!! There are far too many "Kids" with little or next to little training and desire to to a "Competent Job" nowadays. God, I sound like my Dad!!!!

- This reminds me of a lot of "perceived expertise" situations. There used to be a young guy at the dive shop who took an interest in my double hose regs after seeing me dive at the pool when the LDS was running a class. This young guy was proud of himself for what he had learned working at the dive shop. So, he took on a superior attitude. He couldn't just ask me about my double hose regs. He had to TELL me he'd like to get a double hose and fix it up since he learned how to service regulators at the shop.
- I suppose I could have told him where to learn about it and buy repair parts. But, he never asked.
