List of Magazine related Diving Articles

Sat Nov 05, 2011 1:05 pm

Thought I'd start this thread as I want to start collecting magazines with dive related articles and am hoping to compile a master list to work off of. Perhaps others could benefit as well.

If you know of any magazine articles could you list the magazine name and date/issue.

There is the Oct, 1952 Nat.Geo. article about JYC (his first) titled "Fish men explore a new world undersea".

While looking for this I came across this Nat.Geo. index search engine that lists all articles for JYC (and anything else too I suppose):http://shadow.ngs.org/search/searchresu ... ry=&page=0

There is the Jul, 1953 Pop.Sc. "DIY diving lung" article (does anyone know the actual title of the article?).

Also the similar Jan, 1955 Prac.Mech. article "Making an aqualung".

I have a Jul, 1967 Pop.Sc. article on Ed Links Deep Diver titled "Our first Ferry to the bottom of the sea".

Also an Aug, 1934 Pop.Mech. Hardhat article titled "Hunting for lost treasure"

May, 1949 Nat.Geo. article "Goggle fishing in California Waters,"

Thankfully, Dr Sam discusses this article in depth here: http://www.vintagedoublehose.com/forum/ ... =23&t=5997

There is the Jul, 1953 Pop.Sc. "DIY diving lung" article (does anyone know the actual title of the article?).
It's called "Build your own Diving Lung".
In the index, it's called "How to Make and Use a Diving Lung".
On the article page, "How to Build and Use a Diving Lung"

I have 2 copies of this one.

Thanks Bob, now I know what it looks like.

I picked up the 1952 NatGeo just the other day. I do plan to compile the list of NatGeo JYC articles but have been quite busy lately.

Dale
1) Check your E mail

2) There is no end to the diving related articles published in PS PM SI etc..Some are valid predictions of the future, some are comical.

Suggest that you pick them up as you come across them...

3) National Geographic magazine (Nat Geo)
A)Try to locate a copy of the "NatGeo Index." This is a listing of all NatGeo articles. It has been awhile since they were published, so you will possibly find them in the library reference section or at your used book store. Well worth owning as a reference document.---Or print the electronic version to paper

B) There are many many NatGeo dive related articles, beginning with Longley's first UW color photographs in the January 1927 issue to the BS issue then all of Cousteau's onslaught of articles.

C) Get involved with your local library...Let them know of your interest. I spent a number of years on a local Library Board as a result received first choice on dive related books, magazines and Nat Geo. I have all of the Nat Geo issues from Longleys to about ten years ago.

You will soon discover that NatGeo consumes considerable space..I tore out the article and sandwiched between the front & back covers. Even so the collection still occupies several feet of my library shelving.

Hope all this helps

Thank you Bob and Dr Sam, and yes it does.

I will look into the NG index, I've seen them several times in thrift stores that have huge selections of NG's. Once, I even contemplated trying to collect the whole NG library but took a second thought once I realized how much wall space that would be. I still might though...

Did I mention my heartbreak when I visited an out of the way bookstore and inquired about Skin Diver magazines. The lady said in three years no one had ever asked for them so she had just thrown out a whole shelf of them. I was willing to jump in the dumpster after them but the trashman had already come. I see all sorts of magazines in my travels but never them for some reason.

Download that onto your Kindle and you would never run out of reading material for the rest of your life. Quite amazing really when one thinks about it.
