After reading the article more closely it sounds like the diver might have been up in the head spring area where we did the Sea Hunt celebration a couple of years ago since it says the area is closed to the public.... I remember one swam though while we were diving there but it was no where near 10'.

The alligator was captured and euthanized at approximately 7:30 p.m., Tuesday night. They say it was actually closer to 12 feet long and weighed 500 lbs.

Here in Louisiana the gators are on the losing side of the who eats who game. We have an alligator festival where there are alligator dishes prepared many different ways

Indeed, we Cajuns will eat just about anything that you can shake some hot sauce on.

In my neighborhood if you report a gator no one will even respond unless it's more than 5' long, demonstrated aggressive behavior towards a person, and is more than 25 yards from water. Then the call goes to a rotating list of local trappers (kinda like a call list for tow truck drivers that respond to accidents on the road) they come and catch the gator and make stuff from it. There is no catch and release in Tampa these days.
There is one in the pond behind our house and if the pool was not screened in he would be in our yard for sure. We have caught him on rod and reel more than once and I came close to getting him in a net.

I thoroughly enjoy having them around and I understand and accept the risk at home and while diving. It would be not be the same down here without our prehistoric friends around :)

It reminds me of one time when I was down on Avery Island. It was literally crawling with alligators. A little one(only about 4 feet) swam up to the bank where I was standing, I assume looking for a free meal, and, being who I am, I started playing with it with a stick. An older couple walked up to me and asked where all the alligators were. This was a vacationing northern couple, so I looked at them for a moment, said "Really? There's one" and then pointed at the alligator floating less than two feet from them. They immediately got deeply excited and started taking photographs. It made me wonder what they thought all of the other alligators were.

I think it applies equally to all services except for the Air Force.
