Tinnerman Hose clamp question (pics)

Wed May 12, 2010 5:38 pm

Hey Everyone,

Okay, just received my 4th DA and wanted some advice about the Tinnerman clamps. I'm enjoying the DH addiction but have promised myself to dive whatever I buy. Which leads me to my question. I have full intentions on having the DA rebuilt, but wonder if I should re-use the Tinnerman clamps. They seem to be in good condition. Any thoughts?

If you are trying to recreate the original look, then, without a doubt,

@AndyB,

Would you please expand on you thoughts. I'm new at all this and would really like to understand your viewpoint better. Thanks for the help.

Tinnerman clamps stink for use. Buy some of Bryan's repro nylon clamps and save or sell the tinns. Unless u just want a wall hanger that looks cool the tinns are a PIA.

Most definitely buy one of Bryan's silicone hose/mouthpiece sets. You can get them in yellow hoses and yellow mouthpiece. If you decide to keep the yellow/yellow combo, the tinnermans are the correct way to go. I like Tinnermans. If you go with the yellow hoses/black mouthpiece set (most attractive in my opinion) then use the nylon screw hose clamps. These are all provided in the sets. Go to the store and see what is available for your regulator. Tinnermans are getting very scarce. They are no longer made and have become desireable for us "traditionalists". However, your choice. Nobody will make an issue out no matter which way you go.

I actually spoke with sales reps at Tinnerman.
They don't even have part numbers for the larger size tinnerman clamps anymore.
I managed once to find very detailed drawings with dimensions for the tinnerman clamps once. Someone with coin and connections could have some made from those drawings if they had the desire.
IMHO, Not worth it.
BTW if you want the smaller Tinnermans that connect to the horns find a Survivait hose and the Bayonet hose fittings are 1" Tinnerman clamps. I once bought a box of 10 NOS hoses and they had Tinnermans on them.

The cartoon is very cute. I am going to give you some serious advice. Do not dive the tinmans...soak them in some oil and put them in storage. It is easier to buy the regulator than those clamps. In perspective...I have thirty regulators and only one set of tinmans. Just save them...they are not worth much, but a regulator is not worth a penny to someone who does not want it. Know what I mean?

This is just based upon my personal experience, but I say dive Bryan's nylon clamps. Tinnerman clamps are hard to find, they wreck hoses (my one piece hose on my broxton is scored from them), and they are a mother to work with when tuning your reg. They are classy and valuable, but out of my 6 seaworthy doublehoses, only the broxton has tinnermans.

Here is also a real world reason why I do not usually dive tinnermans: I have sucked a duckbill into the horn before (most of us have at least once). Try to get tinnermans or C clips off on a dive boat with a leatherman. Then try getting them back on without puking.

Just my opinion, and you know what those are like :)

Oh well, I guess I am the only one who likes those buggers. So, you can send them to me to rid yourself of those DANGEROUS clamps. Or I'll even trade you a set of nylon clamps for them. I guess nobody will dive with me anymore with correct Tinnermans. :( :(

I like to keep some of the regulators "period correct". I will dive with tinnermanns!

But then, it is possible that all the bad guys were trying to cut his hoses because he had those DANGEROUS Tinnermans. PADI police in disquise????
