Allen, I am also an educator (not lucky enough to be retired yet) and YMCA certified in 1969. I agree with you. The old Y certification program was very rigorous. My instructor, Earl Kennedy, sounds a lot like yours. He is 78 now and still dives on occasion, a true vintage diver. Enjoyed your write up.

WOW! That was a great article Allen and I was able to relate to every bit of it. I also grew up in lower Michigan (Redford Township - Detroit Area), and as I read your article I felt as though I could have wriiten it myself. I'll be turning 60 this coming March so it's no surprise that you and I were becoming interested in diving at the same time and for the same reason. Thanks for a great trip back in time, and you're right that we should all be thankful for VDH, VSS and NAVED. These great organizations and the folks that sponsor them have given all of us the opportunity to become aware of each other, to meet and dive with each other and a place to share the love we have for vintage diving! Ssorry to be so song in getting back to you on this question. I was diving the Carribean with my new Phoenix. I will post a story later on that. The rifle (.50 cal) is a copy with Berks Co. PA influence, circa 1770. I built it about 20 years ago. It has a 47" barrel. A great shooter, cuts a dime size group off the bench at 50 yds. About 1-1/2" at 100. Stock is cherry.

Most definitely. Captain Tom would be a great replacement.
